Malachite
Commonly Found- Ural, Zaire, Australia, Chile, Rhodesia, South Africa, Arizona
Common Colors- All shades of green, nearly white with green, nearly black/green
Hardness- 3.5 - 4
Special Care- Its name in Greek (malakos) means soft and malachite is just that. It should be treated with care and avoid rough activates while wearing it in rings (take it off before changing your oil, gardening, etc) It is also sensitive to heat and can darken if heated. Malachite contains a small amount of arsenic poison so great care should be taken by lapidaries when cutting and polishing the stone, but the stone when set in jewelry posses no threat to the wearer.
Mystical Healing Properties- Due to Malachite's slightly poisonous nature it is believed to protect the wearer against nearly all forms of poison. It is also believed to be a protective stone, providing more protection for children than adults. It is thought to heal broken bones more quickly, relieve arthritis, and stabilize energies. When affixed to a babies cradle many believe it makes them sleep more soundly. Some shop owners place a piece of malachite in their cash register to help "draw in" money. It is also thought to teach patients, loyalty, wisdom, and knowledge.
