Obsidian

Commonly Found- Obsidian is a volcanic glass and can be found near and

around many volcanoes or volcanic islands.

Common Colors- Opaque black, translucent black if thin, grey, deep green,

brown

Hardness- 5 - 5.5

Special Care- Used in antiquity for its razor sharp edge (when chipped),

by some Native American tribes as arrow heads, and various other societies

for its cutting abilities. Obsidian is still used today by some surgeons and

doctors for the blade in scalpels. Obsidian should be treated with the same

care as glass.

Mystical Healing Properties- Obsidian has also been used since antiquity as

various types of jewelry and talismans. It is thought to aid in problems with

the circulatory system and in the breaking of bad habits. Many believe that

obsidian charms will protect against physical and mental harm and wrongdoing.
