Opal Commonly Found- Australia, Brazil, Guatemala, Honduras, Japan, Nevada
Common Colors- All colors, often with many colors in a single stone
Hardness- 4 - 6.5 depending on inclusions
Special Care- Opal is a soft stone and should be treated with care. The highest quality of opals can easily be worth far more than a diamond. Not a stone for everyday wear in rings. All opals contain some quantity of water (up to 30%) and should be protected from heat sources. Opal is sensitive to chemicals. When storing opals they should be stored with a cotton ball or piece of cloth that has been dampened with water or a bit of mineral oil.
Mystical Healing Properties- Opal is thought to have many abilities, the strongest of which is to increase mental abilities in the wearer. For those suffering from mental problems opal is believed to balance both sides of the brain and bring harmony. There are many rumors of opal being bad luck if worn by those for whom it is not their birthstone however this has no basis. Bad luck has never historically, scientifically, or mythically been linked to opals. In the middle ages of Europe blond women (the ones who could afford them) wore opals to prevent their hair from changing color as they grew old.
