Pearl

Commonly Found-  Japan, China, Australia, other island and coastal countries

Common Colors-  Pink, silver, cream, yellow/gold, green, blue, black, can

be dyed any color

Hardness-  3 - 4

Special Care-  A soft stone.  Avoid all chemicals including hairspray and perfumes as

pearls are a very porous stone and will absorb nearly any liquid.  Worn often next to

the skin a pearl will almost always discolor a bit, normally yellowish, with age.

Extreme dryness or extreme humidity over extended time can ruin a pearl.  Pearls

do not last forever, typically around 100- 150 years but this greatly varies depending

on the type of care the pearl receives during its "life".

Mystical Healing Properties-  Physically pearls are believed to provide relief from

stomach pain, eye problems, and urinary problems.  Pearls are an ancient symbol of

love and success.  The oldest known pearl jewelry dates back to around 520 B.C. and

was found in the tomb of a Persian princess.  Still used today in china in a ground up form

for nearly every ailment known ranging from skin irritation to indigestion (which makes

some sense as pearls are calcium carbonate, the active ingredient in Tums®, Rolaids® and

the like).  Pearls are also thought to guard against misfortune.
